Vermejo Park Ranch
Purchased by Turner in 1996 and the largest Ted Turner Expeditions (TTX) vacation property at 585,000 acres, Vermejo offers infinite opportunity for wilderness travel exploration. Located in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, Vermejo is nothing short of spectacular with diverse terrain spanning from short-grass prairie to alpine tundra mountains at 13,000 feet.
Vermejo Park is home to abundant wildlife populations, including large herds of elk, deer, pronghorn antelope and bison, along with black bears, mountain lions, and Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. The ranch is also home to a variety of birds, with over 180 species catalogued on the ranch, including Merriam’s turkey, bald and golden eagles, and red-tailed hawks. Like all TTX properties, Vermejo is especially rich in history, containing coal and gold mining settlements, adobe ruins, petroglyphs, artifacts and abandoned charcoal ovens.
In partnership with Ted Turner Expeditions (TTX), Vermejo Park Ranch offers unparalleled opportunities to enjoy and interact with the natural world and serves as one of the premier ecotourism destinations in the West. Vermejo wilderness travel and adventure activities include hiking, biking, fishing, wildlife viewing, birdwatching, photography tours, and more. In addition to outdoor opportunities, Vermejo Park offers visitors a peaceful, undisturbed experience. Guests of TTX will have the pleasure of staying at Costilla Lodge or at Ted Turner’s private home, Casa Grande.
Costilla Lodge is a palatial, LEED-certified cabin, located on the flanks of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range. Located at 10,200 feet and 25 miles from the property’s main lodge, Costilla comfortably sleeps sixteen TTX guests and includes a dedicated staff of five, including a private chef.
Ted Turner’s magnificent private home at Vermejo, Casa Grande, is now available for booking, after a much-anticipated and extensive renovation. Casa Grande was constructed by Joseph Lyman Silsbee (1848–1913) (mentor to legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright) as a private residence during 1907-1909 for Vermejo’s former owner, William Bartlett. In 2012, Mr. Turner began a nearly 4-year renovation of this Spanish-inspired stone estate, which officially reached completion in early 2016.
Casa Grande is ideal for Vermejo guests looking to experience an unparalleled combination of luxury and historic charm. And at 25,000 square feet, the home certainly lives up to its name, boasting seven bedrooms, including two well-appointed Master bedrooms, a stunning, remodeled kitchen, billiard room, greenhouse, and more.
Guests staying at Casa Grande enjoy a completely customized experience, including private chef services with menus suited to taste and customized vacation itineraries.
